Why I Decamped, Prof Ben Ayade

It is no longer news that Cross River State Governor Prof. Ben Ayade has cross carpeted from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Party (APC). He made the announcement on Thursday in his Calabar office after meeting with APC governors led by the party's interim chairman Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State.

According to the DailySUN report, the governor cited Cross River as being emasculated economically and so needed to return back to the scheme on federal level, reason for his defection. He also cited personality of President Buhari and his commitment for the country's development as other reason, and he believes joining hands with the president would be better for the country. "I believe if everyone of us, as governors, joins hand with Mr. President, we can sit on the same dining table and fashion out a way to govern this country.

Recall that the All Progressives Congress (APC), sometime last year asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to investigate alleged links of leaders of main opposition Peoples Democratic Party and Dubai based fraudster, Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi.

The APC in its request to EFCC made public it Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, said "reports of the criminal conspiracy linking the top echelon of the opposition PDP with Ray Hushpuppi should be a matter of serious interest to relevant authorities in Nigeria."

He noted that at different times, “Hushpuppi” was photographed in Dubai meeting with the PDP’s 2019 presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; former Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; Senator Dino Melaye among other PDP stalwarts.

The Peoples Democratic Party has cried of an attempt to be stifled using the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC). The party caucus which met on Wednesday at the residence of the Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, released a statement warning the agency to desist from arrogating itself the power it does not posses, stating that it is only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that has the power to investigate political party's financial flow.

"It is the exclusive legal preserve of the INEC to monitor the finances of the political parties and how they manage same. So, the law is clear, that it is the function of the INEC to do so and not the EFCC. It is therefore, preposterous for the anti-graft agency to invite the NWC of PDP over a phantom petition by an individual without recourse to what the law says in the circumstance."
