Court Declares Jerry Gana As SDP Presidential Candidate, Sacks Donald Duke  

An High Court in FCT, Abuja has declared a former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, as the winner of the presidential primary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf declared on Friday in his ruling, nullifying the candidacy of former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, as the party’s flagbearer.

Meanwhile, Professor Gana has commended the ruling of the court while addressing a news conference in a separate venue.

He said, "the verdict of the court is a victory for democracy and party politics as the culture of imposition of candidates by political parties is no longer fashionable."

The former minister also declared his full support of the peace accord initiated by the National Peace Committee led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and promise for a peaceful process in the forthcoming general elections.

Barricaded Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Opened

The barricaded Sagamu end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has been opened for commuters. The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mr Adedamola Kuti told journalists during the opening on Tuesday that the barricaded section was opened to ease traffic during the festive period. He said, "the gridlock experienced on the road necessitated the removal of the barricades." He also noted that work will resume on the road as quickly as possible in January so the contractors could maximise the window offered by the dry season.
