The Senate, yesterday, passed the Bill for an Act to establish the South East Development Commission (SEDC) for third and final reading. The passage of the bill followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service, chaired by Senator Emmanuel Paulker (PDP,Bayelsa).

The commission, when established, will take care of the sundry challenges facing the South-East geopolitical zone, comprising Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.

Presenting the report for consideration, Senator Paulker noted that the funding for the Commission would come through one per cent of the Ecological Fund accrual to the five states in the region. He also stated that the Commission would among other things address the ecological problems in the region, such as erosion, which is very prevalent in the South-East.

"The setting up of the South East Development Commission will help to address local issues and historic issues that have for a very long time challenged our unity, our fate as stability as a nation. That part of the country will benefit a lot in terms of developmental contributions and also other parts of Nigeria will benefit from the establishment of this commission.”

Addressing a press conference after the passage of the bill, the South East Caucus in the Senate, expressed satisfaction and gratitude for the passage of the bill, and appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the bill into law.

The Chairman of the Caucus, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who led members to address Senate Correspondents, urged the President to endeavour to sign the bill when it eventually gets to him, so that the South East zone would witness some developmental progress.
